Summer Hiking

Let Western Hiker be your guide each summer into Eagle Cap Wilderness in Oregon's incredible Wallowa Mountains.

The 1800 square mile Wallowa Mountain range is located in the northeast corner of Oregon and boasts alpine peaks, steep-walled valleys, and five designated wild and scenic rivers. At the heart of the range lies the 540 square mile Eagle Cap Wilderness, Oregon's largest.

From the Grande Rhonde Valley in the west to Hells Canyon country in the east, you'll have plenty of room to roam along hundreds of miles of trails without crossing your own path.

You'll find classic alpine meadows, the highest natural lake in Oregon, four officially designated wild and scenic rivers, snowfields, glaciers, rock faces, warm sun, the bluest of blue sky, and no traffic, television, phones, email, or worry.

For climbers, the range has seventeen summits over 9000 feet in elevation with the tallest named after the Sacajawea, the famed guide for the Lewis and Clark expedition. Sacajawea, Matterhorn, and many other 9000+ summits offer some of the best technical and nontechnical climbing in Oregon.

Oregon's Biggest and Best Wilderness
Eagle Cap and Hells Canyon Backpacking
Our experienced guides can help you plan a hiking trip to match your interests and abilities from relaxing weekend hikes to two-week mountain treks. We can help photographers find the best vistas, wildflower displays, or wildlife viewing locations, and if you like to fish, we'll share our secrets about healthy trout streams. Guides will prepare your meals and share tips on wilderness travel at your request. We can even pack your gear from camp to camp by mule if you choose--you enjoy the scenery, fresh mountain air, and sunshine and let us do the work.

Mountain Meadow Camps
Our Main Eagle camp is your bed & breakfast in the wilderness. Hike in or ride a horse, stay a day or a week. Sleep comfortably on cots in our spacious canvas wall tents or out among the trees with only the stars overhead. Dine on grilled salmon, sourdough pancakes, and other Northwest favorites prepared by your camp hosts. Spend your days exploring the many nearby lakes and streams, climbing a mountain peak, or just relaxing and enjoying the peace and quiet. We can also set up a personal basecamp for your group at the location of your choice.

Cornucopia Wilderness Lodge
We operate in cooperation with an excellent lodge that sits literally at the edge of the wilderness. Cornucopia Lodge, near the 19th-century gold mining town of Cornucopia, offers modern, private cabins and meals served family-style. We can arrange your trip to start or end at the lodge.
